2009 Cochrane Cup Results
NCAA Division I Men's Rowing Thank you for visiting the 2009 Cochrane Cup web site, and welcome to Chicago's Southland region!
Cochrane Cup races were held Saturday, May 2, along the Calumet River and Calumet-Sag Channel waterway, 24-mile working waterway that moves much of the Great Lakes commodity shipping to the Mississippi River via barge. The United States Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago allows the City of Blue Island, host of our event, to use this major waterway for racing purposes.
The cup was placed in competition by Mrs. Edward Cochrane in 1961 for heavyweight races among Dartmouth, MIT and Wisconsin. The cup is named after Admiral Edward L. Cochrane, former president of M.I.T., and director of the Navy’s Bureau of Ships. After one race of one mile (1961), one of 1.75 miles (1962) and another of two miles (1963), the cup has been raced on a 2000-meter course ever since.
The 2009 Cochrane Cup was the 49th Anniversary of the competition. The Jablonic Cup race was also held Saturday, May 2 at the Calumet-Sag 2,000-Meter Course. The Jablonic Cup is named after long-time University of Wisconsin Crew Coach Randy Jablonic and pits the Varsity Men's Crew of Wisconsin against Boston University and MIT.
Universities attending the races in 2009 were the University of Wisconsin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, Boston University, and George Washington University.
